The Links Multi Academy Trust Primary Outreach Team provide support to 52 primary schools in St Albans and Harpenden.
The team offer a Tier one approach, often referred to as a ‘light intervention’ trying to tackle any challenging behaviour before escalation. The process usually begins with a completed referral form (SSR) which is triaged by staff before meetings are set up with the school and families. An observation of the young person within the classroom or even unstructured times (lunch times or playtimes) before work begins. The aim of the intervention is to supply the school with strategies to support the young person to have successful school days. The work completed with the young person often focuses on self-esteem, team building, friendship issues, understanding the importance of regulating emotions or simply empowering the young person with strategies to have positive days. Once the sessions are completed (this can vary from one to six sessions across a 6-week period) meetings with staff and parent/carers are once again set up to discuss progress and possible next steps.
The team also provide schools via ‘Solution Cluster’ each month to support primary schools in the DSPL7 area. This consists of schools selecting a time slot to attend a 30-minute appointment held via Teams, where a panel of professionals listen to the schools’ concerns before offering short, medium and long-term solutions. These Cluster meetings are overly subscribed and continue to be appreciated amongst DSPL7.
When we receive a referral, a variety of options may be offered. Each intervention is personalised for the student and may include:
This is not an exhaustive list; we are continually developing our work with schools and professional partners.
Targeted support for young people is offered through 1:1 sessions once or twice a week when challenging behaviour is affecting their learning. We might see a student more often if they are at risk of permanent exclusion, or experiencing a traumatic or transitional event, such as a managed move. Occasionally, it is appropriate to work with very small groups on challenging behaviour issues.
We can also deliver short interventions, such as a return from exclusion programme or a managed move programme.
All referrals for targeted support must be fully completed and include a parent’s/carer’s signature.
