Outreach

Primary Outreach

The Links Multi Academy Trust Primary Outreach Team provide support to 52 primary schools in St Albans and Harpenden.

The team offer a Tier one approach, often referred to as a ‘light intervention’ trying to tackle any challenging behaviour before escalation. The process usually begins with a completed referral form (SSR) which is triaged by staff before meetings are set up with the school and families. An observation of the young person within the classroom or even unstructured times (lunch times or playtimes) before work begins. The aim of the intervention is to supply the school with strategies to support the young person to have successful school days. The work completed with the young person often focuses on self-esteem, team building, friendship issues, understanding the importance of regulating emotions or simply empowering the young person with strategies to have positive days. Once the sessions are completed (this can vary from one to six sessions across a 6-week period) meetings with staff and parent/carers are once again set up to discuss progress and possible next steps.

The team also provide schools via ‘Solution Cluster’ each month to support primary schools in the DSPL7 area. This consists of schools selecting a time slot to attend a 30-minute appointment held via Teams, where a panel of professionals listen to the schools’ concerns before offering short, medium and long-term solutions. These Cluster meetings are overly subscribed and continue to be appreciated amongst DSPL7.

What Do We Offer?

When we receive a referral, a variety of options may be offered.  Each intervention is personalised for the student and may include:

  • 1-1 support
  • Group work: social skills, friendship groups (bespoke)
  • Transition Programme (KS3)
  • Staff training
  • Behaviour Surgery
  • Reintegration support
  • Managed move support
  • Sign posting / advice and strategies
  • Observation, advice and strategies for school staff
  • Support for school staff through regular communication, planning and discussion
  • Support for parents to facilitate consistency between school and home

This is not an exhaustive list; we are continually developing our work with schools and professional partners.

Targeted support for young people is offered through 1:1 sessions once or twice a week when challenging behaviour is affecting their learning.  We might see a student more often if they are at risk of permanent exclusion, or experiencing a traumatic or transitional event, such as a managed move.  Occasionally, it is appropriate to work with very small groups on challenging behaviour issues.

We can also deliver short interventions, such as a return from exclusion programme or a managed move programme.

How to Make a Referral

  • School completes a single service referral form, and assessment and progress form returned to referral@linksacademy.herts.sch.uk
  • School will be contacted and asked to arrange a referral meeting with the appropriate school representative, the parent / carer and student
  • Following the meeting, a plan will be put together with targets set, the intervention starts.
  • Weekly feedback is provided to schools either at the end of the session or by case notes being email to the school This is a short-term intervention and the support will last about 6 weeks
  • An end data Assessment and Progress Form will be sent to the school to complete
  • We will contact the appropriate school representative and request a discharge meeting with the parents / carer
  • Feedback will be given to the meeting and the workbook will be shared with the meeting and then given to the student.

All referrals for targeted support must be fully completed and include a parent’s/carer’s signature.

Secondary Outreach

Targeted support for young people is offered through 1:1 sessions once or twice a week when challenging behaviour is affecting their learning. We might see a student more often if they are at risk of permanent exclusion, or experiencing a traumatic or transitional event, such as a managed move. Occasionally, it is appropriate to work with very small groups on challenging behaviour issues.

We can also deliver short interventions, such as a return from exclusion programme or a managed move programme.

At the start of Year 7, we work with all of our secondary schools to support small groups of young people who have been identified as needing additional intervention during their move to secondary.

DSPL7 The Hub

Our Children, Our Area

NESSie aims to provide therapeutic support for children in Y2-Y7 who may:

  • show signs of developing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
  • be on reduced timetables because of anxiety
  • have trauma and attachment needs that impact on attendance.

NESSie provide art therapies (Art, Drama and Music), using creativity and imagination to improve mental health and are particularly helpful to those who prefer a less verbal approach. Children and young people use drama, music or art to explore, express, reflect and recover from difficult or challenging events. Art therapist are clinicians and are registered and regulated in the UK.

NESSie supports children in years 2-7 with moderate mental health difficulties whose needs cannot be better met by another service and fall within the Local Authority’s priority areas. Referrals are only accepted from schools and parent consent is needed.

Before making a referral, both the parent and school should complete the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and upload the forms to the referral portal. The information in the questionnaire will help the therapist decide whether NESSie is the right service for the young person.
