At Links Academy, GCSE English Language empowers students to develop essential communication skills through reading, writing, and spoken language. The course is designed to engage and inspire students with relevant and accessible texts, while fostering creativity, critical thinking, and confidence in expressing their ideas. This qualification equips students with the tools needed for academic success and future opportunities.
What We Do
At Key Stage 3, we aim to inspire curiosity and foster a genuine passion for reading and writing in English. We explore a variety of texts to engage our learners, encompassing a wide range of genres, audiences, and purposes.
We work closely with our learners to develop both analytical and creative skills. They learn to understand how writers craft compelling characters, settings, and storylines and are guided to apply these same techniques in their own writing. By combining critical thinking with creativity, students grow as readers and writers, finding their voices along the way.
As part of our English programme, we nurture reflective learners who are enriched by language and develop a deeper understanding of a variety of texts and media. Through a supportive and inclusive environment, all students are encouraged to make meaningful progress and reconnect with the joy of reading and writing.
Why We Do It
We recognise the unique challenges and experiences our students bring to their learning. By focusing on building their confidence and rediscovering their potential in English, we create an environment where all students can thrive.
Our aim is to develop reflective learners who are word-rich and possess a strong understanding of various texts and media. Regardless of their previous experiences with English, students make progress and rediscover their abilities in the English Language.
Reading widely supports language development, broadens vocabulary, and familiarises learners with the techniques writers use to leave lasting impressions. This foundation in reading and writing equips students with essential skills for academic success and personal growth.
How You Can Help as a Student or Parent/Carer
For Students:
Reading widely is one of the best ways to improve your English skills. While novels and nonfiction works are valuable, reading doesn’t have to be limited to those. Webpages, articles, poems, and other materials can also enhance your language skills. The more you read, the wider your vocabulary becomes, and the better you understand how writers achieve their effects.
For Parents/Carers:
Encouraging young people to take an interest in almost anything can be highly beneficial. Discussions about current events or news help develop their frames of reference and deepen their understanding of language. Even listening to and discussing one political speech a year can make a significant impact.
Continuing to create a supportive environment at home—where curiosity and engagement with language are encouraged—can help students connect with the joy of reading and writing while building their confidence.
What We Do
We follow the Edexcel GCSE English Language 2.0 course, which is designed to develop students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Our lessons are tailored to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring that every learner can access and engage with the content.
Students explore a range of texts from different genres and time periods, building analytical and critical thinking skills. They practice constructing arguments, expressing ideas creatively, and communicating clearly in both written and spoken formats. The course is structured to help students develop practical language skills relevant to a variety of real-world contexts.
Why We Do It
Studying English Language builds foundational literacy skills that are essential for everyday life and future opportunities. This course not only prepares students for the GCSE exam but also boosts their confidence in reading, writing, and speaking.
By engaging with a variety of texts, students are exposed to new ideas and perspectives, helping them develop empathy and a deeper understanding of diverse viewpoints. These experiences contribute to fostering independence, resilience, and personal growth—skills that are valuable beyond the classroom.
Assessments include both exams and in-class practice tests, enabling students to demonstrate their understanding of key language skills, critical thinking, and self-expression. Attributes like resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to explore different viewpoints greatly enhance their progress.
How You Can Help as a Student or Parent/Carer
For Students:
Success in GCSE English requires consistent engagement and active participation in lessons. Students should immerse themselves in a range of reading materials, including articles, stories, and topics discussed in class. Exploring different viewpoints and practicing their writing and speaking skills regularly will support their progress.
For Parents/Carers:
Parents and carers can support students by encouraging them to engage with diverse reading materials at home. Whether it’s discussing news articles, short stories, or class topics, fostering curiosity and a love of language can help students build their confidence.
Creating a supportive environment where resilience and curiosity are encouraged will help students thrive in their studies and beyond.
